This issue of “Perspectives on Terrorism” begins by profiling Islamist militants in Bangladesh, who often are middle class and have university backgrounds. The subsequent articles focus on 1) why most religious terrorism is linked to Islam rather than to other religions; 2) a comparison of the threats posed by returning US foreign fighters and homegrown jihadists who never went abroad; 3) the type of hybrid war Boko Haram fought from 2010 to 2015 in Nigeria; 4) the details of a double agents’ journey through the global jihad; and 5) whether ‘old’ and ‘new’ terrorists treat the media in different ways.
