As NATO members and allies upgrade their naval capabilities in order to blunt an increasingly aggressive Russia, this report shares the key insights and recommendations gleaned from a recent CNAS tabletop exercise on the GIUK Gap. After dissecting the underlying strategic and alliance-related challenges the maritime area presents, the report calls for 1) the adoption of regionally based strategies, and 2) larger but targeted defense spending.
