Mediation is a key mechanism to reduce armed violence in Africa, but who does it best? Despite the academic bias against African mediators, the evidence now shows that they outperform their counterparts. In this article, CSS senior researcher Allard Duursma presents his recent study which finds that African mediation efforts are more likely to lead to peace agreements, and the agreements are more likely to be durable thanks to their legitimacy.
