Central Asian States: Is Intra-Regional Integration Possible?

The five Central Asian republics have a range of historical, linguistic, religious and political aspects in common, but interactions among them has been marked by distrust, competition, low levels of trade and outright confrontation. While major powers still prefer to engage bilaterally in Central Asia, even employ 'divide and conquer' strategies, there have been tacit signs of improved regional relations since 2016 that warrant closer scrutiny.
