Southeast Asia is a focal point in the strategic rivalry between China and the US. What is beginning to emerge on a global level is already a reality in this region of the world: In a growing conflict, China and the USA are competing for influence with economic, diplomatic and sometimes military means and are trying to change the balance of power in their favor, argues Linda Maduz in this new CSS Corona Blog. In doing so, they promote conflicting political initiatives and notions of order. The possibility of a military conflict around the trouble spots in the South China Sea also seem to be increasingly accepted by both sides. In Southeast Asia, the coronavirus crisis is intensifying geopolitical power shifts and (new) political directions.
