At the normative level, international demands that women be better protected from sexual violence in conflicts and be more strongly involved in peace support have left their mark. However, UN Resolution 1325, which was passed over ten years ago, has only seen limited implementation so far. Traditional societal structures in conflict-ridden states and disparate levels of interest among UN member states prevent a stronger emphasis on the genderspecific implications of violent conflicts. In the case of Switzerland's peace support activities, gender mainstreaming is a well-established feature.
