The recent talks between Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe and Russian President, Vladimir Putin, indicated an improvement in Japanese-Russian relations, most notably in the fields of trade and energy. However, the territorial dispute over the 'Kurile Islands/Northern Territorities' continues to overshadow the relationship. This article traces the history of this dispute and considers the prospect for a solution to the issue in light of the upturn in relations in other fields.
