The united Germany, which according to the “Two-Plus Four Treaty” — a premise for German unification — renounced NBC-weapons, is heavily engaged in disarmament and nonproliferation efforts related to these weapons, holds the CSS‘ head of think tank Oliver Thränert in this SIRIUS article. Against the backdrop of its history, Germany also aims to further the implementation of humanitarian international law as well as a rule-based international order. Germany handles conflicts of aims, either regarding its participation in NATO’s nuclear sharing arrangements or its economic interests well. Germany’s activities are especially visible regarding the international diplomatic efforts to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. All non-proliferation regimes are in a deep crisis. Together with its partners, Germany has a lot of work in front of it to prevent the proliferation of NBC-weapons.
