Since the annexation of Crimea in 2014, NATO forces have been preparing for a confrontation with Russia. This article by CSS senior researcher Niklas Masuhr examines the Alliance's priorities and the development of a selection of its members‘ armed forces. Specifically, he first focuses on the Alliance level and then looks at the land forces of the United States, Britain, France, Poland and Germany. The analysis shows that all the land forces under consideration, with the exception of France, have turned east, but in doing so they are based on different conflict patterns, political contexts and existing force structures, from which divergences emerge.
