Previous research suggests that democratic regimes are particularly willing to contribute troops to UN peacekeeping operations as backing ‘liberal’ peacekeeping allows them to support the diffusion of liberal institutions. However, this article contends this argument rests on evidence from the decade that followed the Cold War’s end. It also finds that in the period between 1999 and 2015, while democratic states were still more likely to make small contributions, non-democratic states were more likely to make contributions above 250 troops.
