Switzerland, a full UN member since 2002, is currently running for the first time for a seat as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council (SC). Its prospects of being elected to the SC at the UN General Assembly in summer 2022 for the period from 2023 to 2024 are very good. The aim of this CSS Study by Fabien Merz is to shed light on experiences and best practices made in other countries with regard to the role and tasks of defense ministries (DM) and army headquarters (HQ) in the context of a SC membership. For this purpose, semi-structured interviews were conducted with representatives of the DM and HQ from Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Ireland and Norway.
