This study provides an introduction to mediation and facilitation methodology and includes an analysis of trends, rationales and lessons learned. It pools relevant resources on topics related to mediation and indicates where and what kind of third party is active. It also highlights the processes in which opponents move from fighting in the field to fighting over the table, and realizing their objectives through negotiation and compromise. The first section focuses on conceptual and general methodological approaches, the second examines various topics that also impact peace processes, such as the economy and environment, justice and governance, security and society.
