This edition examines the future of Russia’s gas imports to Europe. Firstly, Simon Pirani analyses the current context of Russia-Ukraine gas trade and likely changes in forthcoming years, noting that as it stands commerce has been unable to disentangle itself from politics. Secondly, Roland Götz outlines the legal battle underlying the fate of Nord Steam 2, with the European Commission arguing for the jurisdiction of EU law to be extended to the open sea through which the pipeline would run and Gazprom asserting the continued primacy of maritime law.
