In his farewell address at ETH Zurich in July 2002, Prof. Kurt R. Spillmann discussed some of the difficulties that conflict researchers face and ways in which they approach these. The author's commitment to an interdisciplinary approach to conflict research is evident, as he draws on ancient Greek texts, art, psychology, evolutionary biology, and ethnology to demonstrate how deep-seated conflict is in society and in the individual.
