This report takes stock of recent trends in the South China Sea region, primarily by focusing on three issues – 1) Beijing’s growing maritime assertiveness in the area and the tensions it’s raising; 2) the US’ heightened presence in this part of the world; and 3) the recently-concluded arbitration case between the Philippines and China. The text’s author concludes that these developments, and lingering freedom of navigation issues, point to a comprehensive US-Chinese rivalry in the years to come.
