This paper analyzes China’s growing presence in Latin America and its implications for Europe, the United States and the region itself. What’s of particular significance is how Chinese-driven infrastructure projects are altering the continent’s strategic geography, and thereby increasing the prospects for greater regional integration. Given the possibility of this level of change in the region, the paper’s author closes by arguing that Brussels and Washington better ramp up their geoeconomic involvement in Latin America if they hope to retain genuine influence there.
