This paper speculates on the trajectory of post-Brexit relations between the EU and the UK. The text’s authors believe that from an economic standpoint, integrating the breakaway nation as fully as possible into the internal market makes sense, but domestic politics in Britain are at present driving the country towards a hard Brexit. If this turns out to be the case, then Brussels should establish a ‘special relationship’ with London – i.e., an enduring bond which simultaneously keeps the UK at arm’s length from Europe’s internal market and institutions.
