This brief addresses Bangladesh's government crisis, commenting on the negative track record of its democratic and non-democratic governments. It looks at the different forms of regimes the country has witnessed, discusses the prospects for a return to democracy and identifies developments that might point toward a more optimistic future. The author argues that routine free and fair elections have failed to institutionalize democracy in Bangladesh.
