In late 2016 Italian banks find themselves burdened by non-performing loans (NPLs) that are almost as large as their capital reserves and provisions. This is an undeniable crisis, argues the brief’s author, but it also provides the opportunity for Italian authorities to put the country’s banking system back on a sound footing, as laid out here.
