This paper examines the role of political Islam in Indonesian society and politics. The authors examine the results of the 2009 legislative elections in the country and explain the paradox that rising religious conservatism in society doesn't increase the support for islamist political parties. They also examine whether the elections mark a reversal in the trend towards more conservatism.
