This paper examines China's diplomacy in Asia, particularly its involvement in various multilateral processes in the Asian space. The author outlines the changing balances in Asian regionalism, examines the coherence and success of China's multilateralism, and looks at the differences between Chinese actions in Southeast, Northeast and Central Asia. The author argues that China has not yet developed a grand vision for regional multilateralism and continues to work based on a short-term pragmatic agenda. China, the author concludes, continues to prioritize economic affairs over real progress on the cooperative political and conflict-prevention fronts.
