This paper discusses the Indian elections in 2009 and the challenging circumstances in which these elections take place. The paper addresses cross-cutting political, security, economic and socio-cultural issues influencing the elections. The author explains how the exercise is impacted by multiple parties, personalities and positions from India's vast political spectrum. Furthermore, the publication analyzes key national and regional parties and their strategies, key political personalities and issues dominating perceptions of the electorate.
