This brief examines the issue of supply routes to the Afghan theatre of war and the question of seeking alternatives to Pakistani supply routes. The authors argue that the frequent attacks on supplies and logistics in Pakistan have forced allies to seek new routes, focusing on two new areas: Russia/Central Asia and Iran. The brief examines the two options in more detail, particularly from a strategic perspective. The authors conclude that Pakistan is still the best supply route, primarily because Pakistani security forces continue to be committed to protecting the supply lines.
