This brief examines mergers and acquisitions (M&A) in the context of Asia's economic development. It identifies a significant wave of M&A globally and regionally in the early- and mid-1990s. Moreover, there was a marked increase in M&A sales in the region following the Asian crisis of 1997-98, with the average of M&A sales jumping up threefold. The author takes a closer look at intraregional Asian M&A deals and analyzes which factors drive M&A.
