This paper discusses the influx and proliferation of small arms and light weapons in Western and Central Europe, in light of the process of eastward EU expansion. The author states that with the EU and the Schengen rim moving closer to the Balkans and former areas of conflict and instability with large stockpiles of cheap small arms, greater controls and efforts at preventing small arms proliferation and illicit arms trade will be necessary in the EU.
