This commentary examines the unveiling by Taiwan of a new jet fighter design with Russian technical assistance. The authors argue that, given Taiwan's constraints, this is not at all unanticipated. They explore what is behind Taiwan's decision and what options are available for Taiwan to ensure its defense sovereignty in bad times.
