This brief raises several questions in regard to Russia’s foreign policy at a time of economic difficulties. It examines whether it will fall victim to the crisis or whether the crisis will re-energize Russia’s assertiveness. It also analyzes whether the country will mechanically adjust to the declining curve of the oil price or whether it will preserve its self-assertive tone while the economic crisis fuels the aggressive rhetoric.
