This paper discusses the practice, theory and scope of visiting, monitoring and inspection activities under public international law. It compiles statements and findings of participants of an APT workshop, which convened from 23-24 September 1999 in Geneva, Switzerland. Contributions assess monitoring and inspection activities in the fields of arms control, the environment, human rights and humanitarianism.
