This paper assesses the recent evolution of non-traditional approaches to development finance. The author examines the following issues in more detail: the characteristics of the alternative financing mechanisms that have emerged over recent years and their combined contribution to addressing development financing challenges in the poorest countries. He analyzes the development finance landscape in the context of broader trends such as financial globalization and current-account surpluses in some developing economies.
