This paper examines the Philippines as an archipelagic and maritime nation, with a particular focus on the strategic thinking that underlies its policies in the area. The author argues that the Philippines has been progressing more as a maritime nation rather than an archipelagic one, primarily because of difficulties in defining the limits of its national jurisdiction. As a result, she argues, a transformation in strategic thinking is needed in order to protect the country's interests more effectively.
