This commentary deals with the July 5, 2009 riots in China's Xinjiang region. The author argues that the roots of the ethnic violence lie in the deep flaws of China's development approach, which favors growth over social justice and governance. He contests that the riots should serve as a catalyst for China to re-think its vision for the country's future.
