This paper discusses the rise of India as a source and host of foreign direct investment (FDI), with particular focus on bilateral FDI inflows and outflows. According to the authors, India's FDI data at a bilateral level may offer quite a misleading indication of the extent of real linkages, warning that it should be interpreted with extreme caution and identifying some of the pitfalls for researchers.
