This brief examines the impact of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's visit to India from 17 to 21 July 2009. The author focuses on four dominant issues: India's future role as a global player; Pakistan's commitment to fighting terrorism; defense and nuclear energy cooperation; climate change; and caps on carbon emissions. He argues that, overall, the visit was significant as a signal of US determination to build a broad-based political, economic and strategic relationship with India.
