This handbook on applied biosecurity is primarily intended for personnel who work with infectious pathogens and toxins that may affect the health of humans, animals and plants. Biosecurity or applied biosecurity refers to the principles, technologies and practices that are implemented to secure pathogens, toxins and sensitive technologies from unauthorized access, loss, theft, misuse, diversion or intentional release. The handbook introduces the basic components of laboratory biosecurity, outlines responsibility for staff and their roles in the laboratory and focuses on their role in safeguarding laboratory assets, including human resources.
