This paper discusses Iraq's participation in the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) and its repeated violation and non-compliance with the treaty. The authors discuss the process of UN chemical weapons inspections in Iraq, the American military attack on the country, the fall of Saddam Hussein and the Ba'ath Party regime, and the continued search for chemical weapons and weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. The authors explain what steps need to be taken to ensure that Iraq can stay permanently free of chemical weapons and analyze what lessons can be learned from the entire Iraq case.
