This paper examines the reasons behind the Indian government's silence in the wake of Aung San Suu Kyi’s 2009 trial, despite considerable international criticism of Myanmar’s military regime. It points to three major factors for India’s silence – the China factor, its energy needs and the situation in its northeastern region. The author concludes that this Indian position will persist into the near future.
