This brief addresses the aftermath of the Afghan presidential election of August 2009 and specifically looks at some of the preliminary indications of what appears to have happened while the formal announcement of the outcome is awaited. The author argues that the election, with its uncertain result, did not contribute to political progress in South Asia. He maintains that the country seems headed toward a breakdown of the social order essential to govern a multi-ethnic state.
