This paper explores the India-US nuclear cooperation agreement aimed at enhancing India’s stature in the region. It highlights the possible negative implications for South Asian stability as well as the US opportunity to leverage India, and work towards regional stability by helping to resolve outstanding disputes between India and Pakistan. The author explores whether the nuclear deal is really about energy cooperation. He highlights issues such as the separation of civilian/military facilities, the type of nuclear safeguards and the Fissile Material Cut Off Treaty (FMCT). He also discusses the implications for South Asian security, focusing on regional stability and the role of Pakistan and China.
