This paper explores the societal and institutional determinants of terrorism, focusing on Islamic terrorism in South Asia. It argues that although terrorism is a global problem that transcends national boundaries, it does not stem from a social vacuum. The author demonstrates the need for a sociological perspective to understand the root causes of terrorism. He focuses on factors contributing to jihadi terrorism in South Asia and ways in which the US and India can cooperate on counterterrorism.
