The book examines the changes in Japanese military policies, doctrines and action since the end of the Cold War, and its movement beyond domestic defense. It explains the domestic debate over Japan's international role, including the deployment of Japanese forces to international trouble spots and in support of humanitarian emergencies. It also explores the legal and political frameworks surrounding the deployment of armed forces overseas. The authors look to facts and varied perspectives, including from the US-Japan alliance. They also offer their analysis about how Japan's defense policy fits into broader Asia-Pacific regional trends.
