This brief examines the status and future of European troop contributions in Afghanistan, and the associated political debates in the main contributing countries. The authors examine the debate surrounding deployment in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Sweden and Finland. While the debate surrounding deployment in an increasingly violent theater such as Afghanistan is clearly defined, focused and intense in countries like the UK and Sweden, it is much more sporadic and unpredictable in Finland and Germany.
