This brief paper discusses the results of the Afghanistan presidential election of 20 August 2009, whose fairness has been widely contested. The author argues that the election results makes US counterinsurgency strategy in Afghanistan extremely difficult, as the US strategy is premised on an Afghan government that is credible and legitimate, both to get the Afghans to support it and to get Americans and their allies to help.
