This paper discusses the implications of the 2005 EU constitutional crisis for Asian regionalism. The author argues that regional integration works best if it is not aimed at creating collective identities, but rather at helping national leaders address their domestic problems and bolster their legitimacy. According to the author, regional groupings in Asia and other parts of the developing world should learn the lesson from the constitutional crisis within the EU and not follow the latter's path of heavy institutionalization.
