This paper discusses the phenomenon of asymmetrical warfare from a historical and military perspective, which culminates in the analysis of the emerging asymmetric challenges directed against the US. The paper refines the definition of asymmetric warfare, discusses current asymmetric vulnerabilities, and presents a number of policy suggestions aimed at improving US capabilities and readiness to counter such asymmetric threats. The study recognizes new aspects of asymmetric warfare and arrives at the conclusion that the incontestable global conventional military superiority of the United States, coupled with the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, has made the US armed forces uniquely vulnerable to asymmetric threats.
