This brief provides the first of a series of status reports on Pakistan's military campaign to oust the Taliban from South Waziristan. The author provides background to the conflict, outlines the key events that led to and motivated the campaign, and assesses the likelihood of success by the army against the Mehsud tribe's Taliban forces.
