The investigations of the 7 July 2005 terrorist attacks in London revealed that the perpetrators were not al-Qaida operatives from abroad, but rather young Muslims born and raised in Britain. This publication discusses the implications of this finding for British society. The author argues that the UK must absorb dissenting Muslim views into the mainstream. This is because young British Muslims who have few legitimate mainstream outlets of expression are more easily indoctrinated with fundamentalist ideologies. At the same time, Islamic leaders must assure non-Muslims that jihadist elements do not represent the views of the Muslim community.
