This paper examines the mining industry and its impact on post-conflict reconstruction efforts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The author focuses on the governance of the mining industry as a whole, particularly the militarization and exploitation of artisanal miners by armed groups who derive power and influence from the industry. Civil control over the extraction process and the establishment of a more formalized commodity chain need to be priorities for the Congolese government, the author concludes.
