This brief looks at the US’ evolving relations with East Asia. It provides the context in which US President Barack Obama undertakes his first official visit to the region in November 2009. The author concludes that relations between these two global economic powers should be based on institutional arrangements rather than on ad hoc dialogue between the leaderships of the various countries.
