This brief provides preliminary observations on four issue areas in Japan-India relations following the victory of the Democratic Party of Japan in August 2009. The author discusses climate change with reference to the global summit to be held in Copenhagen in December 2009, and the two countries' differing approaches. He then assesses nuclear issues such as the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), nuclear energy and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, before examining economic cooperation and strategic-political-military ties.
