This paper offers an overview of the credit reporting industry in Europe. Credit bureaus make available financial information to lenders to help them assess the creditworthiness of credit applicants. The paper surveys the laws that govern Europe's credit bureaus, and assesses their impact on over-indebtedness, the availability of credit in the economy and consolidation of the European single market.
